Janie Mae Crawford - The main character of the book. The story is a flashback told by Janie explaining the experiences in her life.
Tea Cake - Janie’s third husband and the one man she truly loved. A man several years younger than her and the only man that treated her the way she deserved to be treated.
Jody Starks - Janie’s second husband. He swept her away and became mayor of a new town, but their marriage slowly died.
Logan Killicks - Janie’s first husband. The man her grandmother married her to. A man Janie left because she never truly loved him.
Pheoby Watson - Janie’s best friend. The story is Janie telling Pheoby about her experiences and as Janie’s best friend, Pheoby supports her.
Nanny Crawford - Janie’s grandmother. Nanny was a slave and she wanted Janie to marry a rich man so she was well supported. Her worldview clashed with Janies and caused problems between them.
Mr. and Mrs. Turner - Neighbors of Janie and Tea Cake. Mrs. Turner did not like blacks and like Janie because she did not look like one.
Sam Watson - Pheoby’s husband. He’s a humorous man but he is also very intelligent and notices things that not many people notice.
Leafy Crawford - Janie’s mother and was never a part of Janie’s life. She ran away after giving birth to Janie.
Motor Boat - One of Tea Cake and Janie’s friends. He gets seperates from them during the hurricane and they meet up later on after the storm.
Hezekiah Potts - The helper at Janie’s and Jody’s store. After Jody passes, he does more around the store and starts to act like Jody.
Annie Tyler and Who Flung - Annie Tyler was a young rich widow that runs off with Who Flung, a poor man who takes all her money and leaves her.
